We will continue to update you as these efforts progress. Built in 1937, the atom smasher was an integral piece of cutting edge nuclear physics research conducted here at the Westinghouse Research Laboratory campus.
It is still standing (complete with historical marker) even though the surrounding research complex has been torn down. The Westinghouse atom smasher, built by the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in 1937, launched the company’s world-changing innovations in nuclear research. The five-story tall, light bulb-shaped structure is the last vestige of the Westinghouse Research Laboratories—though it has admittedly seen better days since being Reconstructing Pittsburgh’s Atomic Past.
